There are a number of different dog treatments for worms and when deciding on the treatment, it helps if you know a bit about what you are dealing with. The most common worms found in dogs are ringworm, roundworms, tapeworms and heartworms. Most of these worms are very easy to diagnose and to treat.

Dog Worms in dogs – Symptoms

If your dog is scratching its rear on the ground or furniture or biting at its rear end, it’s likely that it has worms. You may need to get up close and personal with your dog’s feces in order to check it for visible worms or eggs. These can also be found in a dog’s fur especially around the rear end. Other symptoms include, but are not exclusive to, changes in behavior, weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea and weakness.

TYPES OF WORMS

  • Roundworm
  • Hookworms
  • Tapeworms
  • Heartworms
  • Ringworms
  • Whipworms

When looking at dog treatments for worms, you need to know what you are up against. Roundworms live in a dog’s intestines and can be seen in dog waste. They cause swollen stomachs and are most common in puppies which tend to get them from their mothers. The eggs can lay dormant in a female dog and be passed through the uterus or through milk after birth.

Dog Worms in Humans- Symptoms

  • Roundworms can be passed to humans via infected dirt or feces. Roundworms can cause stomach pain, cramps and vomiting in humans but are not usually life threatening. The way to avoid being infected is to dispose of feces properly in bins, watch where the dog goes to the toilet in the garden and avoid these areas and wash hands thoroughly after picking up feces and after touching your dog.
  • Hookworms hook into the lining of the intestine and are very tiny so they can’t necessarily be seen in a dog’s feces. They can cause blood in the feces however, so it is something that you can see after a dog has gone to the toilet. Another sign is very dark, tar-like feces. Hookworms can be dangerous in puppies, and as with roundworms, can be ingested through a mother’s milk. They can infect humans but because they are not designed to be inside the human body, they don’t develop into adults. They cause sores and irritation but as they don’t develop fully, they don’t affect our digestive system.
  • Tapeworms are long, flat worms that also live in the intestine. They have segmented bodies which sometime break apart and can be seen in the dog feces. Dogs can get tapeworms from fleas which is another reason why flea treatment is so important. Tapeworms are dangerous for humans because they cause liver problems which can be deadly especially in vulnerable people. Dogs can easily be treated but humans need to have surgery to remove the tapeworm.

Most Dangerous Dog Worms – Heartworms

The most dangerous type of worms in a dog is heartworms which are spread by mosquitoes. These live in the heart muscle and are only detected by a blood test. Dog treatment for worms of this type is usually successful especially the earlier they are treated. Heartworms can be fatal if the infection is severe.
